School Description

Elmete Wood is a specialist inclusive learning centre (SILC) for students from across the city of Leeds who have difficulties related to their behavioural, emotional and social development (BESD). The school has two sites, one at Elmete Lane and the Vocational Learning Centre located on Stonegate Road, about 5 miles and a 20-minute drive away. The Elmete Lane site was closed for health and safety reasons early in February 2014 and reopened after Easter. A few students occasionally attend part-time learning and training opportunities delivered by five other registered providers, which are: The Hunslet Club, Skills4U, The Beck, Bumpy and MAP. Each of the students has a statement of special educational needs. Some have been excluded from previous schools and have had a disrupted education, frequently joining or leaving the school part way through their secondary education. The vast majority of students are male and almost all are White British. Others are from a variety of heritages. Around a fifth of the students are looked after by the local authority. The school receives the pupil premium for around three-quarters of its students. This figure is much higher than the national average. When the school was inspected in September 2012, the school was judged to have serious weaknesses. There have been significant changes in the senior leadership and staffing of the school in recent times. The seconded full-time headteacher, who joined the school in October 2013, is the fourth headteacher in as many years. The leadership team currently includes a temporary assistant headteacher and a deputy headteacher, who is seconded one day each week from a local secondary school. The membership of the Interim Executive Board established in July 2011 was revised substantially during the spring term of 2014. High levels of staff absence due to illness and an inability to recruit permanent staff to fill vacancies because of financial constraints, led to the employment of numerous temporary staff in the last academic year. Several members of staff from both sites left the school at the end of the summer term of 2014. During 2013 the local authority issued a Statutory Notice and consulted publicly on proposals to make changes to its provision for children with behaviour, emotional and social difficulties (BESD) with effect from January 2014 - including that offered by Elmete Wood. These changes have not yet been implemented.
