School Description

Dormer House School is an independent, non-selective primary school in Moreton-in-Marsh. It is non-profit making and has charitable status. A board of trustees oversees the school’s work under the guidance of the headteacher who runs the school on a day-to-day basis. The school admits pupils from 18 months to 11 years and there are 164 on roll: 100 attend full-time and the rest part-time. The school provides government funded nursery places in the nursery and reception (Foundation Stage) classes and the day care provision. This provision was inspected by a child-care inspector (CCI) in May 2006. There are no pupils who speak English as an additional language and none with a statement of special educational need. The school was founded in 1875 by the Victorian educationalist Charlotte Mason and moved to its current site in the early 1960’s. The school’s aim is: ‘to provide children with a liberal education through a rich curriculum that ensures that each child is treated as a person of importance, able to develop their true potential and so become self-reliant grown-ups, capable of thinking for themselves and standing by their decisions’.

“High achieving and a caring environment: a really special school”

My three children attend this school, and I could not be happier with it. There is such a strong focus on developing confident, happy children. My oldest is now in year six and is applying for a scholarship at an excellent secondary, which we would not be able to afford the fees for. Applying for these scholarships is really only possible because of the huge amount of confidence this school instills in its kids, and the can-do attitude they pick up there. The fees are about the lowest around but this is no reflection on the quality of education, which I have found to be excellent. We moved our oldest from a supposedly outstanding state primary and the difference between that school and this is huge. We value education very highly, and think that this school is a really excellent investment in helping our children with confidence and capability as they move into the much more difficult territory of senior school. All three are very different, and the school has accommodated all of their needs, strengths and weaknesses in a way that has really impressed me. And the drama! What a drama teacher! What child wouldn't have confidence and poise after taking part in an actual genuine Shakespeare production every summer throughout their primary years? They also study art in a much more in-depth way than I ever remember doing, learning about a range of different artists alongside developing their own creative abilities. All told, I think that this school is a 'hidden gem'. It's not actually hidden, it's right there on the High Street, but it doesn't shout about itself like a lot of other private schools do. If you're looking at going private in the Cotswolds, definitely have a look around. You can tell straight away from meeting any of the kids what a great school this is.
“Happy children, happy parents.”

A small, friendly and happy school that truly cares for its pupils. Academically it works for all children, the gifted and talented have their own pathway, those that need extra support are nurtured to achieve their potential. The art, drama and music department is incredibly strong and ,whilst small ,the school regularly punches above its weight in sporting events. My children have both benefited hugely from their Dormer experience, as a parent I could not be happier.
“Absolutely wonderful little Cotswold School”

You could not ask for more for a primary age child than this school offers. It's like one big family where each child is know by all the teachers and the kids play across the ages and genuinely look out for each other at break time. Children from reception are taught by subject matter experts, the focus on the arts, drama and languages is extremely high making the curriculum varied and interesting alongside the expected numeracy, literacy and maths. The school doesn't have much outside space but they use local facilities in the fire college, cricket ground and local park to make up for that so the children do not loose out in any way. We couldn't be happier with this school and highly recommend to any family with primary age children.
“A wonderful school!”

My children have all flourished here despite having very different abilities. This is a rare school which cares more about the children than PR and as a result is a well-kept secret. Definitely worth considering if you have primary age children!
