School Description

Cossington Primary School is much smaller than an average primary school. It draws its pupils, who are predominantly of White British heritage, from the local village and surrounding area, including Bridgwater. The proportion of pupils from minority ethnic groups is low. A small number of pupils of Gypsy/Roma heritage who live near the school also attend. The proportion of pupils known to be eligible for support from the pupil premium grant is above the national average. The proportion of pupils supported at school action is much higher than the national average. The proportion of pupils who are supported through school action plus or with a statement of special educational needs is slightly above the national average. The school meets the current floor standards, which are the minimum standards for attainment and progress expected by the government. The school has undergone a period of uncertainty over the last two years, with a number of short-term or part-time appointments to the role of headteacher. The school now has a full-time headteacher, the fifth to take over the role in this short time. At the time of the inspection the school was undergoing major refurbishment works to all of the ground-floor rooms following extensive flooding that the school suffered in November 2012. Teaching space for Key Stage 2 pupils is currently much reduced. The school does not use any alternative provision for its pupils.
