Caister High School is smaller than the average-sized secondary school. The school has a recognised specialism in arts. Since the last inspection, the number of students on roll has fallen. The school’s mathematics provision was inspected in November 2013, and the overall effectiveness of mathematics was deemed to require improvement. The majority of students are of White British heritage. Around one third of students are eligible for additional support through Pupil Premium funding (additional funding for students known to be eligible for free school meals, those looked after by the local authority and children of service families). The proportion of students who have special educational needs supported at school action is above average, and those supported at school action plus or with a statement of educational needs is well above average. The school meets the government’s current floor standard which sets the minimum expectations for students’ attainment and progress. A small number of students in Years 10 and 11 attend the Nexus Engineering and Training Centre, Great Yarmouth College or train at a local hair salon. A few students in Years 9 and 11 attend Horatio House, an alternative provision for students who need additional support. An external review of the governance of the school was commissioned by the local authority earlier in the year and published during the inspection. The school is looking to become an academy and is currently seeking a sponsor.
