School Description

Brynhyfryd Junior School is situated in a well established area two miles from Swansea city centre in the County of Swansea. The school mainly serves this area of the city, which is an area of social and economic disadvantage. Twenty-five per cent of pupils are entitled to free school meals, which is higher than the local authority and all-Wales averages. The school provides education for pupils between seven and 11 years old. At present 213 pupils attend the school. The school has two mixed ability classes for each year group. Thirty-seven per cent of the pupils are identified as having additional learning needs and five pupils have a statement of special educational needs. English is the main language of the school and most of the pupils come from English speaking homes. There are no pupils from homes where Welsh is their first language. Eight pupils receive support for English as an additional language. The present headteacher has been in post since 2000. There has been a significant change in the headship since the last inspection. The current headteacher works at the school for three days a week, whilst the deputy headteacher leads the school as an acting headteacher for the remaining two days. The individual school budget per pupil for Brynhyfryd Junior School in 2011-2012 means that the budget is £2,954 per pupil.
