School Description

Badminton is a thriving day and boarding school which has remained at the forefront of girls' education for well over 160 years. The headmistress is Mrs Jessica Miles. The school offers a holistic approach to education; to put it simply, they encourage their girls to get "hands on" with their subjects, ask questions and really get stuck in. Above all, learning is fun at Badminton and this, coupled with our homely community and excellent pastoral care, leaves no scope for anonymity.

“A Wonderful School”

Badminton’s strength is the all-around development for students, rich resources and great pastoral care support.
“Nurturing as well as Challenging”

The school academically challenges the girls but also is very strong on pastoral care and developing the individual girl’s strengths, be that an academic subject, sport or extra-curricular activity. The school nurtures the girls as well as challenges them.
“Highly Recommend”

“The main reason for picking Badminton over other schools was seeing how much the girls in lessons looked like they were enjoying themselves, they were captivated and engaged across all subjects. We also liked how skills from one subject were used in another, like poems in geography for example allowing for overall skills and not just subject specific ones. Our daughters had a couple of taster days at other schools as well as Badminton and they both had a skip in their step coming out of Badminton and that just wasn’t the case with the others. We also liked their successful academic record.” Parent of two sisters who board
“From 4-16, my daughter has thrived at every stage”

My daughter has been at Badminton since she was four. She is now sixteen. I have not even looked at another school for Sixth Form and have no intention of doing so. She will go right through because I have every confidence that Badminton continues to be the right choice for her. The Junior School provided a superb nurturing environment, with motivated caring teachers who made lessons incredibly interesting for the girls. They were passionate in their teaching, with creativity being used in every lesson. The girls were taught from an early age to be curious, inventive, imaginative. When I first visited the School when Amelia was three, I remember being told “every child has a special skill; we will find that, and we will nurture it, whether it is Sport, Art, Sciences, Languages, Music - whatever it is", and that is exactly what Badminton has done. From an early age (I think my daughter was 6) Badminton picked up that my daughter had a talent for Science. They nurtured that and built on it. They also picked up that she had great debating skills - this was in Year 6. There was no question for us that Amelia would continue into the Senior School. My daughter is now in Year 11 (GCSE year). Badminton has a holistic approach which broadens the girls’ thinking. The extra-curricular activities available are superb. The Senior School has continued to nurture her love of Science. She is heavily involved in the Science Outreach programme run by the fabulous Mr Williams, which is a superb opportunity for any of the girls. As well as other extra-curricular activities, she attends the debating club and is also involved in Model United Nations - taking part in Bismun 2019 - again a superb opportunity. Her public speaking skills as a result of these opportunities provided to her by the School are excellent. She is a highly motivated, confident young lady and Badminton has had a huge part to play in that. Badminton girls are not ordinary girls and a Badminton education is not an ordinary education.

WHY BADMINTON?

Bristol has its share of very good schools, and we know that choosing somewhere for your daughter isn’t easy.

So what’s different about Badminton?

Our history, our unusual ethos of teaching and learning and our careful balance of intellectual firepower with courtesy and support all set us apart. There is an important place in the world for strong female communities, and Badminton is one of these. We have excellent facilities and some of the best boarding and pastoral care provision of any school.

Girls at Badminton come from all over the globe and know that they can try anything, study anything, do anything, and they do. No one here is judged on superficialities, and Badminton girls rightly learn that their future can be anything they want it to be.

BADMINTON SCHOOL WELCOMES NEW HEAD, JESSICA MILES

The Badminton School Board are delighted to welcome Mrs Jessica Miles as the new Head of the School.

Mr Justin Lewis, Chair of Governors at Badminton said: “Mrs Miles brings with her a wealth of experience in leading girls boarding and day schools. She is a fierce advocate of single-sex education, particularly for girls, and we were impressed by her strong alignment to Badminton’s vision and values.”

Mrs Miles expressed her excitement of being the new Head at Badminton, stating: “I am thrilled to have the great privilege of being the new Head at Badminton; a School that has a remarkable history, a vibrant community, and at which girls know their individuality will be celebrated and their learning expanded far beyond the classroom. I look forward to stewarding this great School into the next chapter of its history.”

Meet the Head: Jessica Miles

Jessica took up her position at Badminton in the Summer Term 2023. She was previously Head at Monmouth School for Girls and prior to that, Head at Queen Margaret’s School, a girl's day and boarding school in York. She started her career at Dulwich College, London where she was Head of Spanish, Deputy Head of Sixth Form and Mistress in charge of Rowing. After 12 years at Dulwich, she moved with her husband and young family to Dorset, where she taught briefly at Sherborne School, before taking up the role of Deputy Head at Leweston School, a girls day and boarding school on the outskirts of Sherborne. Passionate about girls’ single-sex education she is delighted to be at Badminton.

Who/what inspired you to become a teacher?

My love of Spain and all things Spanish. A true passion that I simply wanted to share with everyone and teaching seemed to be the obvious way to do it. Also, an inability in my early twenties to know what I really wanted to do – until a stint as a tutor of A level Spanish in a London ‘crammer’ college made me realise that I had found something I was quite good at. Alongside that, some very happy memories of my own school days where I was nurtured and supported, encouraged and challenged. I benefited from a truly holistic education where I was able to indulge in my love of drama, play mediocre tennis and make friendships that have endured.

What achievement are you most proud of as Head?

Guiding the schools, communities and families that I have served as Head through turbulent times with, I hope, a style of  leadership that shows that you can be kind yet strong, firm but fair. I am also proud of the fact that those schools have guided and educated phenomenal young women who have gone on to achieve brilliant things in their lives. They are above all really kind and likeable people!

What does a successful school look like to you?

A school that exudes joy, vitality and a unity of thought and aspiration.

What is the most important quality you want every child to have when they leave your school? And why?

Self-belief, integrity and kindness.

Please give 5 words to describe the ethos of your school.

Aspiration, community, embrace, vibrancy, curiosity.
