School Description

Althea Park Education Unit is an independent day special school that provides education for young women resident in Althea Park Specialist Services provision. The school opened in April 2006, was last inspected in May 2009 and is located in purpose-built premises in Stroud, Gloucestershire. This provision is owned by Care UK plc, a national provider of specialist health and social care. Althea Park Specialist Services provides 24-hour specialist therapeutic care for clients with mental health problems which have resulted in eating disorders, self-injurious behaviour and other associated difficulties. Most young people have enduring difficulties and have already experienced periods of treatment elsewhere. They may have missed prolonged periods of school as a result of their difficulties. Students come from boroughs or counties across England and their places are funded by their local authorities. The school is registered for students aged from 13 to 18 years of age and there are currently 5 students on roll. Other service users over 18 years of age can also attend the school on a voluntary basis to study specific subjects of interest to them. There are no students with a statement of special educational needs currently attending the school. The school’s stated aim is to ‘produce school leavers who are physically, socially, psychologically and educationally able to take their place in a wider society, be it in the world of work or further education’.
