School Description

Newhall Theatre project is a small independent special school located near to Halesowen in the borough of Dudley. It is located in a self-contained part of a local authority community and leisure centre, Huntingtree Park Centre. The accommodation comprises one large room in which almost all teaching takes place, a small kitchen, storage facilities, a medical room, an office and toilets. The school uses offsite provision or the Huntingtree Park Centre for physical education. It sometimes uses rooms within that centre when it needs additional teaching rooms. The school is a specialist theatre school and has performing arts at the heart of its curriculum. It admits pupils in Years 10 and 11 who have been excluded from school or who are at risk of this and have a ‘managed move’ to Newhall. Consequently, pupils are usually admitted with only a few days’ notice and at any point in Year 10 or 11. The school is registered for up to 10 pupils aged 14 to 16 years. At the time of this inspection, there were five pupils on roll, including one pupil who was attending part-time as part of a phased integration plan. All pupils are from Dudley local authority. All pupils have identified social and emotional needs. A high proportion has support from CAMHS (the Children and Adult Mental Health Service). Some have additional special educational needs, such as attention deficit or processing disorders. None has a statement of educational need or an education, health and care plan and no pupil is in the care of the local authority. Individual pupils are eligible for the pupil premium funding. Inspection report: Newhall Theatre Project, 26–28 January 2016 8 of 11 Pupils are mainly taught in small group and one-to-one sessions. The school opened in January 2001. At its last inspection in January 2010, the quality of education was judged good. The Newhall Theatre Project is a registered charity and a limited company. There is a Board of Trustees. The headteacher is called the Project Manager and sits on the board. She has responsibility for the dayto-day running of the school. The school does not use alternative provision.
