The concentration of pupils shows likelihood of admission based on distance criteria

This School Guide heat map has been plotted using official pupil data taken from the last School Census collected by the Department for Education. It is a visualisation of where pupils lived at the time of the annual School Census.

Our heat maps use groups of postcodes, not individual postcodes, and have naturally soft edges. All pupils are included in the mapping (i.e. children with siblings already at the school, high priority pupils and selective and/or religious admissions) but we may have removed statistical ‘outliers’ with more remote postcodes that do not reflect majority admissions.

For some schools, the heat map may be a useful indicator of the catchment area but our heat maps are not the same as catchment area maps. Catchment area maps, published by the school or local authority, are based on geographical admissions criteria and show actual cut-off distances and pre-defined catchment areas for a single admission year.

This information is provided as a guide only. The criteria in which schools use to allocate places in the event that they are oversubscribed can and do vary between schools and over time. These criteria can include distance from the school and sometimes specific catchment areas but can also include, amongst others, priority for siblings, children of a particular faith or specific feeder schools. Living in an area where children have previously attended a school does not guarantee admission to the school in future years. Always check with the school’s own admission authority for the current admission arrangements.

3 steps to help parents gather catchment information for a school:

  1. Look at our school catchment area guide for more information on heat maps. They give a useful indicator of the general areas that admit pupils to the school. This visualisation is based on all attending pupils present at the time of the annual School Census.
  2. Use the link to the Local Authority Contact (above) to find catchment area information based on a single admission year. This is very important if you are considering applying to a school.
  3. On each school page, use the link to visit the school website and find information on individual school admissions criteria. Geographical criteria are only applied after pupils have been admitted on higher priority criteria such as Looked After Children, SEN, siblings, etc.

School Description

Pupils are happy and safe at St Nicholas. The shared values of the school ensure that pupils feel a part of the school community. Pupils look after and include each other during lessons and on the school playground. The diverse backgrounds of pupils are something that is celebrated, and pupils are proud to ‘come from lots of different places but make one big family’. The behaviour of pupils around the school and in lessons is good. Typically, pupils listen well to adults. Bullying is very rare at school. When it happens, staff are quick to deal with it. Pupils enjoy and appreciate the opportunities leaders provide them to have a say at school. A range of responsibilities are available to pupils, such as being prefects or digital leaders. Pupils work hard in lessons to reach the expectations staff have of them. Children in the early years make a strong start to school. They settle quickly into school life and develop the language and mathematical knowledge they need ready for Year 1. However, as pupils move through the school, there are inconsistencies in the quality of education they receive across subjects and across classes. This means there are gaps in pupils’ knowledge that leaders have not identified and corrected.

"> My son will be moving to Y4 from September. I think the change in the school in last 18m - 2 years has been incredible. We were actually considering moving him but the new Head has been a breath of fresh air. There seems to be a completely different atmosphere and more structure. Events appear to be more often and better organised. I feel my son is thriving and just loves school.
“Parent of a child in reception”

"> My daughter really loves school, I think that's the first thing I have to say, and with good reason. St Nicholas, is a great environment for learning, with a real focus on developing children. As a single form entry school it feels like a family, the staff know all the children and families. The teaching is exceptional particularly the teaching of phonics which has a special focus in the school. As a faith school not only are the children educated in on academic level there is also strong focus on Christian values. There are so many things which set this school apart, whether its Forrest play for reception children or having a specially trained school dog to support children with ADHD and autism. Really glad I selected St Nicholas for my children.
“Friendly and safe”

"> St Nicholas School has a wonderful atmosphere. It is such a friendly school and my children enjoy attending. The school has provided my children with excellent education and for me more importantly well-being - my children feel safe and happy.
